Each year the Artwork Archive team goes on a mission to find the best art opportunities, grants, and calls-for-entry for the upcoming year.

Below you will find a list of the top artist residencies, international open calls, artist grants, exhibition opportunities and art competitions that we believe will benefit artists in 2023!

Eligibility Info

Project proposals should be multidisciplinary, meaning that they should incorporate one or more of the following: music, dance, spoken word, and other visual or performing arts.

Individual artists and artistic collaboratives are encouraged to apply. A collaborative application should be submitted by one member on behalf of the group. That member will be the primary contact for the collaborative.

Proposals should demonstrate the applicant’s mature body of work that reveals a mastery of techniques and processes within a developed conceptual framework.

Proposals should also reflect an applicant’s readiness to engage with the public, and be an integral part of the Museum experience for visitors.

Artists recognize that Louis Armstrong House Museum serves a diverse public and agree to create work that is suitable and appropriate to all ages.

Applicants must comply with all Museum guidelines, as well as any mandates by local, state or federal agencies, regarding public health and safety throughout the duration of the Residency.

Applicants must be legally able to work in New York State.

This program is made possible thanks to the generous support of the Ford Foundation. Any original work created through the Artist-in-Residence program will be covered by a Creative Commons license.

You are 45-years old or older.
You are a painter. For the purposes of this grant, painting is considered the application of various media (oil, acrylic, gouache, ink, tempera, watercolor, egg tempera, casein, enamel) on paper, canvas, fabric, or wood. This includes fresco. This excludes mixed media, encaustic, collage, dry pastels, chalk, digital paintings, prints, and work in graphite or drawings. The use of multiple paint mediums is allowed (ie mixing acrylics with oil paints). Do not submit images in ANY of these excluded mediums as they will not be reviewed. Only paintings will be considered.
You are American. You must be either a citizen of the United States or have permanent residency in the United States, though you can be presently living abroad.
A need for financial support must be clear and demonstrated.

A Studio in the Woods: Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies

We support each residency with an evaluator/ally, liberatory land orientation, two photography sessions, and an interview with a videographer. We additionally fund optional field trips such as boat rides and eco/history tours. Depending on the needs of the project, we may be able to assist artists in accessing Tulane University faculty consultants or research collections. We provide full room and board including food, utilities for living, and studio space to selected residents. Residents are expected to cover personal living expenses, additional materials and supplies, and any other expenses relating to the cost of producing work incurred while in the program. Travel and shipping expenses to and from A Studio in the Woods for the residency are also the responsibility of the artist.

Both established and emerging artists may apply, but a dedicated practice and demonstrated commitment to public engagement are expected. Artists of color are encouraged to apply and we are particularly interested in receiving applications from Indigenous artists. Students enrolled in degree-seeking programs are not eligible.
