Once again I find myself drawn to painting small panels both as a challenge, and to work out how a larger painting might work out. This slice of the North Branch of the Lamoille River in Waterville gave me an opportunity to push myself even further in providing a lot of detail in a small space.
This one was an unexpected 'discovery.' A small slice of the larger landscape that captured my imagination. Finding these spots when I'm out scouting, or not even looking for a painting subject, are often the most fun to paint. I discover them, or they discover me, instead of me looking for a predetermined view. I find a freshness in just focusing on representing something new.
I worked on some new techniques for this piece, representing more detail than I have ever attempted on a piece this size, and I'm delighted with the result. I am also inspired to paint a larger, move expansive view of this spot and look forward to solving the challenges a larger piece will present.
