Lower Pleasant Valley Road, in Cambridge, offers these wonderful long views of Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak, and is a favorite of artists and photographers. After resisting painting these scenes for years I finally gave in this year. The views are just too good. Why resist all this time? Working at a gallery up the road in Jeffersonville I saw these scenes painted maybe a hundred times. What could I offer that was different?
But every artist offers a different take. In this painting the mountain is less the center of attention but just playing peekaboo around the bend in the stream. Its a little bit different than the usual composition for this location. This small piece is also on a canvas panel instead of my usual smooth panel, so the overall paint application is a little less detailed.
This is essentially the same location as the winter piece I recently completed from a spot just to the right of this perspective.
