Sometimes a location takes a long time to tell you how to paint it. Or if it is worth painting at all. In this particular case, the actual scene has a paved two-lane road running rather ugly right through the center of the scene. I've driven that road and looked at that scene hundreds and hundreds of times, often thinking 'There's a painting there'.
The solution was to use my imagination and replace the road with a farmers tractor path and depicting the scene how it may have looked prior to modern transportation. Once I had that resolved it was pretty straightforward to work from photos and create a realistic foreground to compliment the incredible view of Camel's Hump. The path creates a nice lead-in for the composition and works well to tell an interesting story.
