Placemaking is often about treasuring the old and rejuvenating it into something new. The Old Mill is a recognisable part of Hahndorf. It was built in 1851 by F. Wilhelm Wittwer Jnr who arrived as a child on the ‘Zebra’ from Brandenburg. The Mill made flour from grain brought by surrounding farmers until it became unviable in 1912 when the grain industry waned due to soil depletion. In 1971 John Gordon bought the mill and converted it into a restaurant which became the iconic Old Mill Hotel.
