Haines, Alaska is the northern terminus for the Alaska Ferry from Seattle/Bellingham, Washington. The artist was in Haines to catch the last south-bound ferry on December 6, 1989, and this rapidly executed painting was done in the last light of the short day, as wet clouds lay low over Haines and the mountains. City lights are reflected on the calm waters and a black raft of ducks are at the left, just offshore. / A companion piece, same size, was rapidly painted in the afternoon from the same viewpoint: 'Haines, Alaska -- December Afternoon.'
