“When I discovered this building at the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, SD, I felt compelled to paint it because of the beauty and tranquility of the scene. Since then, I have come to appreciate the true historic significance of this fish hatchery to the state of South Dakota.”
Born in New Jersey in 1948, Jon Crane left the crowded East to attend college at the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1971. He spent the next five years as an Air Force pilot before launching his art career in Rapid City, SD. Jon uses a distinctive dry brush technique and has earned acclaim for his nostalgic rural America landscapes. Jon was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2021. He now lives with his wife, Gail, along a secluded trout stream in the Black Hills.
