“This is the eighth painting that I have done of the Meeker Ranch near Custer. The ranch is the last remaining Black Hills ranch on public land. In 2007 I discovered that it was scheduled to be burned that winter by the Forest Service because they lacked the funds to take care of it. With the help of many people, we were able to save it and formed the Black Hills Historic Preservation Trust to preserve this and other buildings on public land.”
Born in New Jersey in 1948, Jon Crane left the crowded East to attend college at the University of Northern Colorado, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1971. He spent the next five years as an Air Force pilot before launching his art career in Rapid City, SD. Jon uses a distinctive dry brush technique and has earned acclaim for his nostalgic rural America landscapes. Jon was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2021. He now lives with his wife, Gail, along a secluded trout stream in the Black Hills.
