Inspired by a plein air study at South Holston Lake while my husband was fishing. It was cold and all I was able to do was a grisaille underpainting of the calm and peaceful lake reflecting the sunrise as it broke through the clouds above the distant mountains. I had to finish in the studio and use a lot of memory to capture the feel of that moment........wishing he was there with me watching that sunrise! It was one of those moments you wish you could share and there was plenty of room on that rock. Several passes of color, glazing and scumbling were used to enhance the atmospheric depth in this rendering.
Snowy Invitation" was inspired by a Saturday afternoon drive midwinter in January 2024. We found ourselves at the junction of Bowman Ford Road and the Bristol Highway (11E/19W) in Piney Flats, TN, when our gaze was drawn across the road to an old, forsaken side path marked by a broken gate. The recent snowfall had draped it in a picturesque veil, accentuating its beauty, especially as the distant field shimmered in a golden hue under the late sun's glow, casting reflections on the pristine snow.
Captivated by the scene, I captured several reference photos, eager to return to the studio and bring this moment to life in my artwork. Formerly titled, "A Midwinter Day's Dream," this painting was reworked and subsequently finished on the same day the following year. (My dad's birthday)
It captures the essence of a winter day, often long and dreary. However, amidst the cold and darkness, a drive in the crisp, rejuvenating air and sunshine can be invigorating. Throughout the winter months, I yearn for the warmth and brightness of sunlight, and I hope this rendering serves as a reminder of the Light and its promises, bringing warmth and inspiration to all who view it.
(As an aside note: The reference photo was taken on my grandson, John's birthday. He happened to be with us that day. Subsequently, I finished painting this rendering on my dad's 85th birthday. - very coincidental) Even more coincidental is that the rework was finished on my dad's birthday the following year.
