From my hotel window in Daytona Beach, I witnessed a stunning sunrise as the pier reached toward the glowing horizon. The water shimmered with colors more reminiscent of sunset than dawn, casting a peaceful, almost dreamlike mood over the scene. To capture this view’s elevated and angled perspective, I began with a brunaille underpainting—essential for working out the values in such a complex composition. I used Venetian Red throughout the palette to unify the tones and maintain harmony across the piece. This painting became one of my more intricate works, both technically and emotionally. It reflects the quiet awe of that morning, where light, water, and structure met in perfect stillness.
