The cheetah's face was created using free motion thread painting, a technique that involves lowering the feed dogs on my sewing machine and "painting" with a variety of threads. The background showcases a non-traditional curved piecing method. Strips of fabric, string, and thread have been used to represent grass. The beaded fringe is made from commercial beads and small nuts that my children and I gathered long ago at a park near the Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon. The central part of this artwork is embellished with free motion quilting and thread painting, and the border is hand quilted using bold stitches that harmonize with the fabric design. The fabric for the border was purchased during my travels in Kenya, where I was fortunate to have encountered a cheetah in the wild and have represented it here. In Swahili, the word for cheetah is "Duma."
