“The Unknown” is an abstract or modernist wooden artwork inspired by architectural forms or natural tree-like structures. The vertical arrangement of wooden slats, coupled with the staggered layering, creates a sense of upward movement, evoking growth or transformation. The warm, natural wood tones contribute to an organic yet structured aesthetic, harmoniously blending geometric precision with a sense of randomness.
As with most of my work, this piece was inspired by my wood supply in my studio. The fine wood used in this work was sourced from a wood store in National City. On a cold and rainy day, the local wood supplier was closing its doors. I noticed a large stack of discarded wood pieces, presumably remnants of multiple projects. After sanding, the wood revealed its beautiful grain patterns.
The composition of this piece was improvised, without a predetermined shape or size.
- Subject Matter: Multiple species of wood.
