This piece holds a significant place in my collection, as it was crafted specifically for the esteemed event 'Women In Hip Hop,' curated by the talented Exmiranda, a notable musical artist based in Toronto. Held in April of 2021, the exhibition served as a platform to honor the contributions of women in the hip hop community, and I was thrilled when this particular piece was selected for display and eventually purchased.
Starting with a sturdy bristol board paper, I embarked on the intricate process of bringing Remy Ma to life on the canvas. With the precision of micron and copic markers, I carefully rendered her likeness, capturing both her strength and charisma. Using an exacto-knife, I meticulously cut out the portrait from the paper, ensuring every detail was crisp and clean. Before moving on to the next stage, I applied a protective sealant to safeguard the artwork against any potential damage.
For the background, I opted for scrapbooking wallpaper, selecting a design that would complement Remy Ma's persona and the theme of the exhibition. Once again, I applied sealant to the wallpaper to ensure its durability and longevity.
Then came the nerve-wracking yet exhilarating part - the resin. Pouring and spreading the resin over the artwork required precision and patience. Any error in the sealant application could result in disastrous leaks that would ruin the bristol board beneath. Thankfully, my careful attention to detail paid off, and the resin adhered flawlessly, encapsulating the artwork in a glossy finish that enhances its visual impact.
The end result is the stunning piece you see before you, a fusion of creativity and technical skill that pays homage to Remy Ma's influence in the hip hop world. It's more than just a portrait; it's a celebration of female empowerment and artistry, immortalized in mixed media for all to admire and appreciate.
