STATEMENT: I saw this ruble while on a hike in the Scottish Highlands. Although a ruined building may appear romantic and picturesque, these ruins tell another story, a story repeated throughout human history and across the globe. This particular landscape shows the aftermath of the Scottish Clearances, or the forced evictions of small holders in the Scottish Highlands in the early 18th century and continued intermittently into the early 19th century. British landlords burned out subsistence farmers in an attempt to punish Highlanders for the Jacobite rebellion and to gain land for more profitable sheep farming.
