Lately, I’ve been painting fish using metallic watercolors—the shimmering effect brings them to life in such a captivating way. I began with vibrant tropical species, drawn to their bold colors, but soon felt inspired to revisit the freshwater fish I painted for my grandson’s book about Lake Winnipesaukee. The rainbow trout was one of the first. While it’s more commonly found in rivers and streams, it still felt like a perfect subject with its iridescent hues and graceful shape.
