Nike, Always shining, winged
floating like a supermodel
head and shoulders above the rest of us
She has pedestals all over
but she never seems tied down
or fixed by anything
certainly not anything so mundane as gravity
Why just this past summer
I was zipping around the exit from I-95
onto Shore Road in the Bronx
Zipping a bit to fast I must add
when I looked up
as I always do
at the winged statue of Nike in the park
And everything was different
rather than Nike glinting gold
generally sparkling almost unbearably
on the top of her tall, tall column
today she wore a little black dress
and it was the atmosphere
that glittered with gilt
As I swung too fast
around the curve of the exit
her column the center of my compass
she flashed a brilliant smile and leaped
