Daphne in 4 Seasons
Daphne works at the Brooklyn Museum,
There are several reasons for this.
One, she has always been interested in art.
That is what caught Apollo’s eye in the first place.
Well, let’s say second place,
first off he just liked her looks.
Two, Daphne is employed at the museum
because she really can’t stray too far from her tree
in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
And, being only a demi-god and not a full deity
she must make a living like the rest of us.
Contrary to popular belief Daphne’s tree
is not a laurel tree but a cherry.
Daphne: Spring and Summer are the first two of a four panel series. With these paintings I am riffing on Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and the story of Apollo and the nymph Daphne. But this time Daphne’s shape is not constrained by men. She is not continually stuck in the form, a tree, her father gives her or the species, laurel, Apollo determines. Daphne’s headdress changes each season according to her whim, the first one being cherry blossoms. So much more feminine than laurel leaves.
