The original use of the word cartoon signified the sketch for a painting. That is how I am using the word here. I am taking Michelangelo’s idea and reducing it down to a few elements. Taking the background figures and flatten them down to lines and a few colors. Then I play with the idea of God, nixing the old bearded white man and substituting in a young blue-collar black man. Though a use the word cartoon in its original meaning I am also playing with the modern cartoon meaning, keeping the colors flat and punching as if them could be a panel in a Marvel comic book or a graphic novel. This painting is part of a series inspired by the Renaissance. Though it is not as organized a project as the NY Muse project.
