Athena in the Studio 1 & 2, Athena at Barnes and Noble, and Athena at the Institute of Fine Art Library work together as a group, though only Athena in the Studio 1 &2 are a diptych.
In Athena in the Studio 1 and 2 Athena is standing in my studio first staring down my cat and then laughing in amazement when the cat is not cowed. The two of them first making eye contact with each other and then with the viewer. Besides the interaction between the two figures. I am also playing the circles in Athena’s skirt off the squares of the graphicly illustrated shadows. This was an almost unconscious inspiration that came from my day job at the time where I worked in PhotoShop. The color palette in PhotoShop resembles the squares in the shadows. Athena’s sometimes warlike persona, represented by the helmet she holds, is placed in juxtaposition with the soft pinks, light blues, and golds of the paint colors. As a diptych these two paintings share a prose poem which is installed with them as a laser cut and painted relief sculptural element of my handwriting.
