This series began as a challenge to complete one small painting each day. Since I was painting with oils, it actually took a week for one painting to be completed. I did 25 small works and then decided to enhance some of them with an additional canvas at the bottom making a diptych. Each mask is taken from a real ancient mask from around the world and re-created using my Plastic Space abstraction.
Fortune Dragon Mask — an abstract, two-panel work that portrays a mythical mask through flowing curves and layered textures. Warm earth tones of terracotta, ochre and gold are offset by bright blue accents that thread through ornate patterns and spiral forms, leading the eye across the composition. Scaled surfaces and rhythmic circles suggest a creature both mysterious and approachable, while the vertical format gives the piece a dynamic, sculptural presence. A striking, graphic accent that will lift a living room wall, entryway, or narrow space.
