This energetic patch of wildflowers was inspired by my 5" x 5" oil study "Happy Blues". A few years later, I was still thinking about those little bluebonnets. I liked the looseness and texture I'd painted into that small oil. Employing the same composition and impressionistic style as I'd used in my study, I gave this patch of wildflowers a life-sized canvas to grow on.
I used several colors of blue with a complexity of colored glazes to give those bluebonnet spikes depth and dimension. Sprays of small yellow flowers separate into individual blooms that wave in the wind, which adds motion to the full-sized painting. The composition is meant to put your feet right between the flowers, so step carefully, please.
Oil paints, heavily applied with brushes and palette knives hold those many transparent color glazes in irregular patterns of light and shadow. This maze of color and shape furthers the sensation of standing there with petals brushing your legs, scents of spring surrounding you and spring sunlight pouring down on all.
