Painting a cloud means being as quick with my strokes as the winds aloft pulling vaporous tendrils toward the heavens as boundless energy churns within. I chose a small format for this fully developed pastel study of towering cumulus so that I could concentrate on capturing that energy. The edges can't contain this one, and the cloud climbs off my paper. What makes it a study, rather than a polished painting? This richly colored painted sketch has no underpainted layers of color to show through, and the hinted mountainous foreground holds scant detail. The energy and motion of the cloud carry this miniature into the category of "painting" rather than drawing, however.
