Texas is a place where it's easy for something to be bigger than life, and this isolated blossoming yucca in the rugged Davis Mountains isn't meant for a bud vase. Rising from a grassy outcropping of burgundy jasper, the cluster of needle-sharp spines protect the tall flower stalk even as they glitter in the sun. The background is a dark, shadowy tangle of oak, pinon pine and madrone, and expressing the energy of these woods was as important as showing the fragile strength of the fragrant, creamy flowers.
I paint nature's unexpected gifts, and it was easy to imagine a cowboy smiling as he rode up on this isolated bouquet.
