Walking up on isolated wildflowers in the high desert is like popping a chocolate bourbon ball into my mouth, then biting down. Oooh. (Thanks, Dr. Carol, for that treat--now we're addicted!) Both bring me instant delight, as if I could've forgotten the joy of the last flower or decadent truffle experience. While grass around here stands dull and dormant in March, fallen oak leaves form a mottled carpet of brown and gold. As we hiked the mountainside we call home a few days ago, this cluster of coin-sized white flowers nestled in the grass and leaves like BURIED TREASURE.
Painting a la Georgia O'Keefe, I drew these wee blossoms larger than life. Even though my paper was only 7" x 5" the flowers are zoomed. I paid special attention to the movement of the petals, which in life seemed to dance and beckon the leaves to join in. That's what I say in my painting-- Dance With Me! The light is flat. No dramatic shafts of sunlight. The story lies in the pop of white against earth tones and in the weaving motion of the forest floor. It's a happy painting that invites you to boogie.
