“My work is an overflow of my faith and view of life as a fun and beautiful experience,” Katherine Sanders says. “I use vivid colors and bold mark-making to create playful images and host classes to teach my students to do the same.
“In addition, I love to partner with you to imagine portraits from your precious photos of pets and people. I invite you to look through my shop at original paintings, prints, portraits, portfolio, and classes.”
Piece Description
“I wanted to capture the celebration and festivities of this milestone in the community in the way that people always celebrate these events, with cake, fireworks, and a party,” she says. “In honor of the 70th anniversary of Kimray in 2018, I envisioned the AAA piece as a large cake. I changed the scale of the valve to the people to show the enormous impact this small piece of equipment has had on generations of people in our community. Each person and their family benefits from the Kimray legacy and each person and their family contribute to the success of the Kimray vision.
“The characters in the piece have tiny forks to show that they share in the celebration of what they create here. While touring the Kimray facility I noticed the variety of people who work together on this campus with the common purpose of creating products that are useful and innovative. These differences are expressed through the variety of colors used to depict the partygoers. I used the earplugs that I saw on the workers during my tour as a design element to give the impression of dance, music, and movement to the characters in the piece.
“There were eight visible bolts in this view of the AAA, so I used the bolts as lit candles to represent the seven decades past, and had one of the characters lighting the eighth candle as the next decade of production begins. I chose black as the background color to flatten the picture plane and to put the viewer’s attention squarely on the AAA. The bright colors and high contrast create a cartoonish effect, which is an intentional contrast to the industrial and functional facility where the piece will be displayed. I hope to convey celebration, teamwork, and fun in this piece.”
