For over fifteen years, I taught painting workshops at the National Trust Garden, Filoli in Woodside, California (nr. San Francisco). The technique used on this is wax and watercolor on rice paper. You build up the values with layers of watercolor and wax. The wax is used to stop the flow of the watercolor, much like a batik. When finished, you remove the wax by ironing it onto newspaper - and voila!
