Born to Dutch dairy farmers in LA, lived life cross-culturally, especially in Africa , now pursuing my first love, making art.
MessageEverybody brought something wonderful to my apartment in Abidjan for the celebration dinner!
We were a team that had worked hard together, sweated it out literally in the humid climate, argued, laughed and cried together over the years. We had gone through malaria and hepatitis and other unmentionable tropical nasties.
All of us thrown together, far from our countries of origin, working in minority language development.
Each of us with different areas of expertise: translation, linguistics, literacy, cultural anthropology, language learning.
The range of personalities: visionaries, detailed ones, loud, quiet, extroverts and introverts.
Diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
We became endeared to one another, and each made our unique contribution, balancing out the extremes, and doing far more together than we could ever have done alone.
Hard work; hard play! Memorable celebration.
And I'm sure we disturbed the neighbors.
