These paintings evolve through a process of layering, editing and responding. I begin with a loose compositional sketch, but it's only through building, scraping back and making unexpected marks that the painting finds its own direction.
With Tidal Karaoke, sweeping bands of colour gradually suggested intersecting waterways and tidal currents. The painting has a rhythm of its own, balancing calm passages with moments of energy and movement. Rather than describing a specific location, I like leaving that open, so the viewer can discover their own sense of place.
