This the site of the original battle at Pene Taui's pā redesigned by Te Ruki Kawiti at Ohāeawai. As at Ruapekapeka the fortification caused the British enormous embarrassment and was not taken destroyed until Kawiti, Heke and their men had deserted the trenches. The church and cemetery sit atop the original battle site which historically has become a way of de-commissioning a site of conflict.
