A Glimpse of the Unknown is looking through the center of the many things going on in our lives, some good and some bad, and some just distractions or shiny objects. This painting encourages the viewer take a moment and look through this momentary place in time to examine something we may not know or understand. It might be a hope, wish, or prayer or it might a peaceful, quiet, or still moment. We don’t know our future; we can only imagine it or hope it follows our will. Even if we believe we know what it is, it is still only an imagination.
As I thought about our spiritual side and physical side this series of paintings developed using lots of texture and actual physical additions from the earth. The blank canvas or panel is painted pure white with gesso and/or paint as a beginning. For me the paint directly applied to the canvas simulates the spiritual side of life. Before adding paint, I add a layer of texture material in various areas of the canvas which will represent the physical side of life or the spiritual beings in the ethereal area. This is the beginning motions of the painting. Upon this I apply multiple layers of paint to express the depth of the life we live in both the physical and spiritual simultaneously.
