Between Fire and Light explores the moment where energy tips from quiet warmth into something more volatile and alive. Working in layered acrylics and oils with palette knives and wedges, I pushed red and yellow into each other until they felt less like colors on a canvas and more like pressure, heat, and light trying to occupy the same space. Up close, the surface carries the traces of that struggle—scraped passages, ridges of paint, and small pockets of color where the underlayers break through. From across the room, the piece reads as a bold, glowing field of red and gold; step nearer and you’ll find a complex geography of texture that rewards slow looking. This work is made for spaces that can handle intensity: a living room wall that needs a focal point, a dining area that comes alive in evening light, or an office or studio that thrives on creative energy. It’s an unapologetically vivid painting that brings warmth, movement, and a sense of ignition to contemporary interiors.
I was inspired to break from my painting of non-representational pieces to do something different. I decided to do this series of florals as it is something I rarely paint. These florals are different from any I have painted before and were a real joy to do.
