At the moment, my painting is concerned with the search for form, with the interplay between line and surface, between structure and dissolution.
This work radiates a sense of controlled unrest; a very deliberate balancing of sign-like qualities and gestural freedom. It is layered and spontaneous, with flowing areas, drip traces, as well as sharp, linear elements that overlap and intersect. The graphic structures recall sketch-like marks or studies of form; intentionally “tilted” and incomplete, searching and probing, yet at the same time decisive, carrying the strength of imperfection.
I love these works as they are coming into being — it feels a little like jumping back 10 or 12 years in time. Back then, my practice was much more focused on form and material, less gestural. In these works, many aspects of 25 years of painting come together.
