Chicken Wire 1" & 2" gauge

The inspiration for my wire sculptures came from a recent trip to Ireland, known to be a “thin place,” where the space between heaven and earth is thinner than most. While there, I felt a strong connection to the world, others, and myself that left an imprint on my heart. I especially reflected on my close friends and their trauma from pregnancy and childbirth. According to the CDC, most adults know at least one person who has lost a pregnancy, with one in four pregnancies ending in miscarriage. A more terrifying statistic: every single day in the United States, at least 135 expectant and new mothers have dangerous or life-threatening experiences due to pregnancy or childbirth.

October is Pregnancy, Infant, and Child Loss Awareness Month. Every year, tens of thousands of families in the United States are faced with the devastating loss of a mother or baby. Sadly, the grief of these families and their babies’ lives are rarely recognized. Through my sculptures, I hope to honor the families who have lost their babies and the women who have lost their lives. I dedicate this exhibit to these friends and their children.

My sculptures of “The Veil” are made to bring attention to lives impacted by pregnancy and infant loss and especially to honor those infants who taught love and grief in the same short breath.
