This portrait is based on a photograph of a Shoshone woman named Panamint. I have placed her in the high desert, holding a traditional basket, collecting berries on a hot day. She is consumed by the sun’s rays and shadows. I have placed a small snake who serves as a reminder of the precautions she must take in this environment.
