A Springtime Gathering
Phase two, completed April 2024 - "A Springtime Gathering"
“A Springtime Gathering," the latest iteration of Erick Wonderly Varela’s revolving mural, features colorful, stylized hummingbirds and rhododendrons to celebrate the incoming spring and summer weather. This mural mixes Erick's main styles, with the rhodie flowers utilizing the artist's take on naturalistic illustration, while the hummingbirds are drawn in a way that echoes Central American folk art. Much of Erick's new work is focusing on "pollination" as a metaphor for building community and connection among each other.
Phase one, completed September 2023 - "I Got You Something"
"I wanted my first mural on this wall to showcase my love and adoration for crows. Crows and other corvids display not only great intelligence, but a real sense of personhood. Crows recognize faces, play games, make tools, hold funerals, and give gifts. It's that last bit that I wanted to highlight in this piece, that not only shows another side to these birds, but reflects on the tender and vulnerable feelings of giving and receiving affection from our loved ones and communities." - Erick Wonderly Varela
Part of the Fresh Paint Initiative which elevates emerging muralists by giving them their own wall to use as a canvas for two years, and for the artist to continually evolve the work over the entire period.
