Penny Bovell's earlier works contained figurative depictions of clouds and sky which have developed, in later works, into more ambiguous forms such as globs, nets, mists and hazes. These refer to the constantly shifting phenomena that appear in the sky, only to disappear not long after, which seem to oppose the solidity of our experience on the ground.

In her own words, Penny says that she hopes her methods of "dispersals, precipitation, flow and erasure of pigment and medium evoke myriad shapes and events that I can imagine to be puffs of smoke, floating clouds, currents of winds or astral explosions".
