Produced by Adolph Zukor of Paramount Studios. The documentary was shown at Le Paramount Theater in Paris on 28 Mar 1935 (see images of original program). Pius XI, serving as pope from 1922 to 1939, called for an "Extraordinary Jubilee Year" in 1933 to celebrate the 1,900 anniversary of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jubilee years are declared by popes as either 'ordinary' (occurring at regular intervals of 25 or 50 years) or extraordinary (occurring to mark special occasions or particular universal needs). Pope St. John Paul II declared a similar extraordinary jubilee year in 1983; and the last one (the sixty-fifth 'extraordinary' one) was declared by Pope Francis in 2015 as a "Year of Mercy" for the world. The start of the Jubilee is marked with the opening of the Holy Door. This door is only opened during the Holy Year and remains cemented shut the rest of the time. All four major Basilicas in Rome have a Holy Door: St. Peter’s, St. John the Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major. The rite symbolizes the fact that faithful are offered an “extraordinary path” towards salvation during the Jubilee. The Holy Doors of the other Basilicas are opened after the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica has been opened.
