The Passover Plot is a sword-and-sandal political thriller based on Jewish biblical scholar Hugh J. Schonfield’s controversial revisionist history book of 1965. The story suggests that Jesus carefully planned his ministry according to biblical prophecy, and staged his own death by drinking a sleeping drug that would render him unconscious and cause him to be taken down from the cross before the Passover. His later “resurrection” would cause the Jews to proclaim him the Messiah and lead them to overthrow Roman oppression. It is one of the few instances in the Biblical movie genre where a conspiracy theory forms the foundation of the narrative.
