Discovery

Killarney Park was one of Chris’s favourite places — a regular camping and canoeing trip, where he’d sketch and paint in watercolour on site, and take photographs to bring home for later. Storm Front grew out of that practice: a moment of weather caught in the park, worked up afterward into this larger oil on canvas. At 38 x 56 inches, it’s one of his bigger pieces — the scale giving the approaching storm room to build across the canvas. Oil on canvas, 2008.

About This Collection

Chris James Cooper brought a rare combination to his landscape paintings — training as an ecologist and an architect, paired with a lifelong love of paint and light. His work was shown in several Ontario galleries during his lifetime, and reflects decades spent observing the natural world closely, both scientifically and artistically.
