The storm has moved through. What’s left is this — a shaft of pale light breaking through swirling cloud and falling straight down the centre of the water, the forested islands sitting dark and still on the horizon, the lake settling back into itself.
Chris painted storms often, but this is something rarer: the moment after, when the light comes back and everything is quiet again.
Dated 2008, this work belongs to Cooper's mature period and masterfully captures the quiet, powerful moment of a storm clearing over a northern lake. The vertical 30" x 20" composition emphasizes the vastness of the sweeping sky, while a brilliant reflection of light on the water leads the eye to the distant, resilient islands. The title, "The Storm Passes," is inscribed on the stretcher bar on the verso.
