The bas relief walls are based on the stucco walls of the medieval El Transito Synagogue in Cordoba, Spain, but rather than a literal synagogue, this is a sacred space created from shared memories. The pattern of the cut and carved layers of foam is based on the pattern of my grandmother's 1970s floor-to-ceiling wallpaper in her home in Kew Gardens, Queens, New York. My grandmother passed away in 1999, and after passing to my uncle & aunt, the house was eventually sold, so this space only exists as a collective memory held by the living members of the family, impermanent, deteriorating and sacred.
