Taira no Kiyomori became the head of the Heike in 1153. While Kiyomori was belligerent and quick to anger, his son Shigemori had a just and calm nature that enabled him to provide restraint against his father’s tyranny before his early death in 1179. When various omens suggested the downfall of the Taira clan, Shigemori went on a pilgrimage and confessed to divine presence that he could not change his father’s unjust behavior and his desire to abandon his life to seek enlightenment. Upon returning to the capital, Shigemori fell ill and refused the aid of a Chinese physician as he thought it was shameful to recieve help from a foreigner. He soon after died and was remembered for his good judgement and respect for the honor of his land and fidelity to the emperor.
