- A Parody of Yoshitsune Receiving a Scroll of Military Secrets from the Daughter of Kiichi Hōgen, 1818, Year of the Tiger
- woodblock print on paper
- 8.5 x 7.4 in (21.59 x 18.8 cm)
Long before he was a warrior in the Genpei war fighting for the Genji, Minamoto no Yoshitsune studied with famed military strategist Kiichi Hōgen. To acquire Kiichi Hōgen’s Tiger Scroll that contained military strategies, Yoshitsune seduced his daughter by his flute playing. The scene portrayed shows the daughter presenting Yoshitsune with the scroll. The motif on Yoshitsune’s trousers is the crest of the Minamoto family while the tiger skin sword sheath often worn by Yoshitsune references the zodiac year of the tiger. The screen not only hides their secret activity but also alludes to the New Year. Three poems above the figures discuss spring, martial strategy, and the singing of a bird.
