In this print, Lady Jōruri is shown with her koto, a stringed musical instrument that she was known for playing skillfully. Her relationship with Minamoto no Yoshitsune was popular with many storytellers and was the basis of many plays throughout the Edo period from 1603-1868. Jōruri appears as a courtesan looking past her bamboo screen. The Jūnidan Jōruri —Twelve Chapters of the Story of Princess Jōruri —follows the romance between Yoshitsune and Jōruri and is the basis for the series from which this print originates. Toyohiro was not only a leader in the landscape genre, but he also taught Utagawa Hiroshige, a master of the ukiyo-e tradition. The print also features a poem from Sakuragawa Jihinari.
