Known for her bravery and beauty, Tomoe Gozen was a warrior for the Minamoto clan. Called “a fighter to stand alone against a thousand” in the Tale of the Heike, she is portrayed in full armor with a mitsudomoe (three comma motif) on her breastplate from which her name derives. She fought beside her husband Minamoto no Yoshinaka until his death at the Battle of Uji river in 1184. At Uji, Tomoe and Yoshinaka were two of the few survivors on the Minamoto side, and Yoshinaka told his wife to escape alone knowing he would die. Later, she had a son with Wada Yoshinori.
