This piece consists of 365 small objects that were made daily during the period of May 1, 2001 (international Labor Day) through April 31, 2002. On each day, I collected a single word that would come to me in the written form, whether it be from a handwritten letter, a magazine, piece of junk mail, etc. Each day, this single word prompted the creation of an object, usually consisting of very simple, found materials: this word became the “title” of each element.
The horizontal rows within this piece document the twelve months of the piece’s duration, with each day of the month represented. As such, the piece reads as a narrative of my life whereby often the most mundane action can evolve into the most significant moment in a given day. Collectively, the daily activities and memories from a year in the life add up to a very rich one, as it must for each person’s life.
Every day, a word lands in the hand …
