My work speaks of the surreal manner in which our natural environments are rapidly shifting, whereby the concept of “normalcy” is becoming extinct. On January 1st, 2023, with the notion of developing the image of a newly evolving bird, I began the process of making a random bird part every day for the entire year. By December 31st I had created 365 elements consisting of numerous feathers, eyes, beaks, feet, bones, innards, etc. The medium for each piece was graphite or colored pencil on duralar, measuring no larger than 4 inches. This daily process was designed as a discipline to assemble elements for a new bird, one whose evolution would be dependent on my response to daily observations and impulses, and whose final form was purposely not pre-determined.
In the months that followed, I cut out and collaged together all of the elements to create a singular creature on paper, vaguely resembling a bird with outstretched wings, yet defined by its uncanny and unique collection of parts. Each of the 365 elements is secured in place with two small beads which also function to add texture, light and dimension to the image. What emerges is a bird-like creature based on what we know through biology and science, yet whose form is dependent on my imagination over the course of time, specifically with a focus on the natural cycles of daily existence. A handwritten timeline, describing each bird part on the day it was made, frames the image.
