Carte de visite depicting James Edward Schram (1840-1867) and his wife, Phebe Adelaid Townsend (1844-1904). The couple married in Ulster County in 1862. James' mother was Sarah Hallock and his uncle was Nehemiah Hallock. Schram belonged to the 7th Regiment, New York and sailed on the ship "Daylight" to Annapolis. Schram then joined the 21st New York Militia, where he was promoted to Major. The Schrams lived in Poughkeepsie and Newburgh. James worked briefly in oil refining with his brother, Nicholas Hallock Schram.
