Plate, 8 inches diameter. Blue transfer. Printed maker's mark for Alfred Meakin. This border-only pattern features a band of repeating arches, each containing a suspended anthemion embellished with smaller scrolls. The pattern is confined to the edges of the plate: at the top, bottom, and each side, a stem with flowers and leaves springs from beneath the border design. Each curving stem contains naturalistic leaves and sprigs with small flowers and buds.
The Royal Albert Works were established by Alfred Meakin, Tunstall in 1881. Mr. Meakin bought the works formerly occupied by Turner & Tompkinson. Mr. Meakin died in January 1902.
