Pitcher, 6.5 inches tall. Brown transfer. Unknown maker. The Rd. No. dates the registration of this pattern to 1889. The pattern name "Ratcliffe" is perhaps a reference to the former hamlet of Ratcliffe on the north bank of the Thames River in southeast England. The pattern itself, however, bears no relation to that reference. It features a wraparound pattern of flowers, foliage, and birds, including blackberries and violets. The central image is on the front of the pitcher and features a rather large, pigeon-like bird in flight. The border along the handle and inside rim consists of a simple chain of stylized flowers and leaves.
